What is IPL (Intense pulsed light)

IPL, short for Intense Pulsed Light, is a light therapy method employed to address a range of skin concerns. It is used to treat issues such as wrinkles, age spots, sun damage, freckles, rosacea, acne, and broken blood vessels (capillaries). Additionally, IPL is effective for hair reduction on various body areas, including the face, neck, back, chest, legs, underarms, and bikini line.

In comparison to laser treatments, which concentrate on a single wavelength of light, IPL emits light across a spectrum of wavelengths, similar to a photo flash. This scattered light is less focused than a laser, allowing it to penetrate the skin down to the dermis, the second skin layer, without harming the top epidermal layer. This characteristic minimizes potential damage to the skin.

Within the skin, pigment cells absorb the light energy, which is subsequently converted into heat. This heat serves two primary purposes: it eliminates unwanted pigment to reduce the appearance of freckles and other blemishes, or it destroys the hair follicle, preventing further hair growth in treated areas.
